Breed Association Genetic Recessive Traits
Genetic Testing Policy (Recessive Traits & Others):
Only bulls that satisfy the criteria of paragraphs (a) and (b) below are eligible for sale:
Each bull must be free of the following genetic recessive
genes for the breed registry issuing its registration paper:
– the bull must be free of genetic recessive traits for AM, NH and CA. This is satisfied by providing: (1) an official laboratory test indicating the animal is negative; (2) a registration paper indicating the animal is free; or (3) a “Potential Carrier Report” indicating the animal is free of the traits.
–the bull must be free of genetic recessive traits for Idiopathic Epilepsy and Hypotrichosis (hairlessness). This is satisfied by providing: (1) an official laboratory test indicating the animal is negative; or (2) proof of non-carrier ancestry.
Simmental (Purebred or Composite)
– the bull must
be free of genetic recessive traits for AM, NH, CA, OS,PHA and TH. This is satisfied if the bull’s genetic statusis indicated as being green, mid-green or light green bythe ASA’s “TraitTrac” system.
– the bull must be free of genetic recessive traits for Osteopetrosis. This requirement is satisfied by providing: (1) an official laboratory test indicating the animal is negative; or (2) proof of non-carrier ancestry.
For any genetic recessive defect not specifically addressed
in subparagraph (a) above:
1. Any Purebred (Angus/Simmental/Hereford/Red Angus/etc.) bull is eligible for sale if the bull is eligible for registration under its breed’s registry rules regarding the recessive trait; or
Any composite bull is eligible for sale if the bull is eligible for registration under the policy regarding the recessive trait for the breed registry issuing the bull’s registration paper.
The method of showing a bull is free of a genetic recessive gene under subparagraph (a) above shall be used to determine the status of a genetic recessive gene under this subparagraph (b) when necessary.

One of the easiest ways to verify if an animal does not have the potential of being a carrier of a recessive trait is to print a performance pedigree. If there is “NO DISCLAIMOR” printed between the pedigree and performance information, then the animal has been either “Tested Free for Recessive Traits” (AMF or NHF) OR it has “No AM-NH-CA Carrier Ancester” in its pedigree.” If there is a disclaimer, then it will tell you which recessive trait(s) the animal must be tested for.
American Simmental Association
The Simmental has a TraitTrac system that has a “Color Coding Button System” to designate an animal’s genetic status. This can be found on the animal’s performance pedigree. A A dark green or lighter shades of green button indicates the animal has been “Tested Free, Parentage Free, or Documented Free” of recessive traits. While a bright yellow button indicates “Population Risk,” pink button indicates “Carrier in Linkage,” and bright red is a “Tested Carrier.”

Listed on the performance pedigree is the “Genetic Defect Status” which list which Genetic Defects that animal has been tested for. More complete information can be secured from the breed association performance department.
